Lovers Rock

Directed by Steve McQueen (2020)

Named after the style of reggae music, Lovers Rock follows a reggae house party in 1980s London. It isn't complex, it doesn't try to make any big statement, but it is extremely aesthetic and intriguing - which, to me, is a lot like reggae music, containing simple chords and classic beats while still captivating and enjoyable. This movie has amazing costume design; every time the camera panned to a new person someone in my family commented "cool shirt" or "beautiful dress." Like I mentioned before, the music in the movie is also enjoyable (I loved Silly Games). While there is some plot, action, and tensions, the film mostly just vibes. If you're in the mood to experience a reggae house party,  Lovers Rock isn't a bad place to start.  (12/29/20)
