Last Night in Soho
Directed by Edgar Wright (2021)
I have to say, the first 2/3 or so of this movie were amazing. It goes like this: a small-town girl today moves to London and begins dreaming about a woman from the 1960s, and it becomes increasingly difficult for her to separate her life from the woman's; the girl romanticizes it at first and then starts to see the misogynistic and deplorable characteristics of the 60s. It is psychologically thrilling, reminding me of Black Swan, and I got very intrigued on how the two lives were going to interconnect across time. However, the last third decided to take a turn to an almost cheesy horror-flick vibe. Some interesting plot points from the first two thirds of the film were neglected, and certain characters were in my opinion degraded in quality due to the desire to have a "twist". Although it was still entertaining till the end, I am disappointed that Last Night in Soho ended up floundering such a potentially fascinating premise.
